Research-Defenitions of micro and macro analysis
Find a
definition for micro and macro analysis (in relation to film)
http://www.slideshare.net/hasnmedia/conventions-micro-and-macro
Micro aspects are the smaller aspects you depict from a media text, it is important to analyses in depth all the different symbolic and technical codes in order to create conclusions which lead to your macro analysis. These small details could include; camera angles, lighting, mis-en-scene, body language and color could indicate the bigger message which is trying to be portrayed, this could be in the form of narrative, institution, audience, representation and genre.
Relate this back to your understanding of codes
and conventions
This links to codes and conventions because codes are usually found in micro elements which are used to help the viewer deduct meaning out of the text and Conventions of the genre can be found through macro analysis.
Predict what you expect to see in the horror genre in terms of these micro aspects
Within the genre 'horror' i expect to see camera angles such as high and low angle shot, this is because there is usually a protagonist and antagonistic and therefore there unequal power and influence is likely to be shown like this. I suspect many close ups will be used in order to emphasis facial expressions, especially when pain or fear are involved. I also believe there will be a lot of low lighting, this is because when we are unable to see everything us as an audience will make assumptions, this would add a lot more fear. In terms of props, i assume there will be lots of weapons, this is because when you see a character with a weapon, you instantly become more scared of them. I suspect a lot of slow yet intense non diegetic sound will be incorporated to create suspense followed by vicious screams and raw's of the diegtic sound.

Research-Horror conventions which arrise in the opening scene of Jaws
The codes and conventions are based on those included on this slide share;
http://www.slideshare.net/kbamediastudies/codes-and-conventions-in-horror-films
This opening clip to Jaws displays many examples of codes and conventions within the genre horror. Firstly the setting of the scene is a beach, which is a secluded location away from the public eye, this means that if danger does strike, the victims are unlikely to be able to seek help. This puts them in a highly vulnerable position which could make the audience feel on edge. From the outset the chilling atmosphere is alluded due to the fact that it is night time, because vision is limited possible dangers may be unseen. The low lighting of the scene and the cloud filled sky create uncertainty which is similar to the code of 'the stormy night' which could indicates that something bad is going to happen. The fence that the teenagers are running beside is acting as a barrier to the unknown, despite this the characters manage to gain entry which shows they are ignoring he warning. The fact that the teenagers are drunk in itself acts as a hazard as they are less likely to make sensible decisions or react to danger in a rational way, this adds to their defenselessness. The way they remove items of their clothing on their way supports this as it implies that their behavior is far from rational. Just as the boy approaches the beach the code named 'the fall' is incorporated, this is could act as a wake up call encouraging them to stop and think. It is also used as a 'fake scare' as the audience may be concerned for his well being. The female then goes of into the ocean which is clearly an even more secluded and dangerous location and the fact that shes on her own and a weak defenseless female makes the whole situation seem a lot more uneasy. That is also another code 'a character goes astray'. We then see the male struggling to even take his clothes of which clearly shows that if anything was to happen to his friend, he is in not fit state to save her, this shot is used to make us anticipate the girls where about even more. The worms eye view of the females legs from the predators perspective confirms that the worst is yet to come. We see her smiling into the distance, when suddenly something jolts her head. Through a combination of dietetic, non-dietetic and dragging motions the convention 'a character dies in the first 5 minutes" is successfully completed.

Independent learning
Independent learning is learning which is directed by ones self. It is purely defined, constructed and completed by the learner. Teachers may act as facilitators or give guidance, however the learner is guided to create there own path and trust their own decisions in order to complete tasks. Independent learning is also about finding and using resources correctly, this may be from other peers constructive criticism or research they have found on there own. It is about collecting our thoughts and understandings and applying them in order to achieve.
How am I going to achieve?
- I am going to conduct research by using my effective skills and methods including focus groups and analysis of data.
- I am also going to create detailed and well
thought out plan whilst involving appropriate creative skills and technical
language.
- I
am then going to communicate in depth understanding of vital aspects of media
including; key terms, codes and conventions.
- I
am going to use my analytical skills to deduct meaning.
- I
will construct a well organized and critical debate whilst cross linking other
aspects of media.
- I
am going to ensure my writing is sophisticated in order to express my ideas in
a coherent and concise way.
